By March, 18 Women Have Already Been Killed by Violence in Australia

It is only March, and yet 18 women have fallen victim to violence, 17 of them killed by men. That works out to be almost 2 women a week since the beginning of the year. It is a disgrace and a travesty, felt deeply by women around the country who continue to feel unsafe everywhere we go. When is enough, enough?

These are their names:

JANICE WALKER, 68. Janice died on January 2nd, murdered by her partner, who then killed himself.

ALISON (ALI) ROBINSON, 39. Alison died on January 5th, in a deliberately-lit fire. A man called David George Evans has been charged with her murder.

NEROL DOBLE, 65. Nerol died on January 7th, due to a fire in her home which was deliberately lit by her son.

Daryl Allen Robertson is serving a 27-year sentence in prison.

AMARJIT KAUR SARDAR, 41. On February 16, Amarjit was run down and killed by her husband, Yadwinder Singh. Police believe he tried to cover up the scene to make it look like an accident, and also lied to 000 operators. Police said they had been called to a number of domestic violence incidents at the home. Yadwinder Singh is charged with Amarjit's murder.

REBECCA YOUNG, 42. Rebecca was stabbed to death by her partner Ian Butler on the 16th of February. He then killed himself. Ian abused Rebecca throughout their relationship, and is a known bikie gang member.

CHAITHANYA (SWETHA) MADHAGANI, 30. On the 9th of March, Chaithanya's body was found dumped in a bin. It's believed her husband left her body there. He then took their son to India.

The last woman, JOANNE PERRY, 53, died on the 8th of March. She was a victim of domestic violence, stabbed to death by her daughter. Her daughter was shot by police when she refused to drop the weapon.

This is 18 women too many. My heart is heavy writing this, knowing so many of these women were killed by someone they were supposed to be able to trust, knowing some of them were random attacks. Knowing how easily I could be next. Knowing I can't walk in the street listening to music, because I always need to be 100% aware of my surroundings. Knowing I can't go for a run in the park without jeopardising my safety. Knowing every day that the women I love also don't feel safe.

We will remember them. Do better, Australia.
